HBO Now is a streaming service by HBO that allows users to stream the network’s newest episodes of current TV shows, along with streaming some of their older TV shows such as The Newsroom. This service allows for users to pay $14.99 per month (after a free trial) and be able to stream the newest episodes of new and current TV shows such as Silicon Valley, Veep, and Game of Thrones.
The first thing that I loved about this service is the notifications for when new episodes of your favorite TV shows that are now available to stream. You will also get notifications when you HBO adds new content to the app such as new movies.
Video quality is great on all of my devices. It’s basically a lot like what you would find on Netflix or YouTube, so I’m glad that HBO Now keeps it simple that way.
My favorite feature about the service is being able to stream older HBO content, such as TV shows like The Newsroom. It’s one of my favorite TV shows of all time and the fact that I have access to it on a streaming platform makes me want HBO Now even more.
A con that I did find with the service is that you have to have flash running on your Mac when streaming the service from the HBO Now website. Also, the site took a while to load when streaming the new episode of Silicon Valley a couple weeks ago. Granted, that could have been because of my internet speed at the time or that my MacBook Pro only has 4GB of RAM and can take a while to load things.
Another issue that I found is the name; HBO Now. You see, to me, I think that the service should allow users to get a live stream of HBO. After all, it is called HBO “NOW.”
Other than those tiny flaws, the service is pretty great for how niche it is. Overall, I’m giving HBO Now 4/4 stars. It’s a great service and well worth the money for those who really want to watch HBO content without the cable/satellite subscription add-on.
