During the holiday season, Tapbots created and released a brand new version of Calcbot for the Apple Watch. It is completely redesigned from the ground up and was partially done due to the new Apple Watch Series 4 and the new sizes (40mm and 44mm).

For starters, I do like that the app does sort of go back to some of its original roots with its simple-to-use interface and nice design. When introducing a new or redesigned app, simplicity is the key.

Next up is the overall functionality of the app, which is pretty cool. I do have a love/hate relationship with the fact that you have to wait for the answers to load. This means that when you type 18 + 24, you do not hit a “=“ sign, but instead, you just wait till the app loads the answer. It does not take too long, but there are times when I do miss that “=“ sign.

One thing I am glad about when it comes to the new Calcbot is that the app it go rid of the Force Touch add, subtraction, multiple and divide buttons since I always felt like I was taking the chance of cracking or breaking my Apple Watch screen when using that feature. Now all I do is tap those buttons and get exactly what I want with no worries about my screen.

Lastly, I love the fact that the app has a complication available on the watch face. This makes it easy for me when I am cashiering at work (because I do this freelancing at the moment) and can easily access a calculator on my Apple Watch to make some easy calculations. It makes my life easier and always gets the job done right the first time.

With everything said here today, Calcbot 2.4 gets 4/4 stars from me. The redesign is better than I would have ever imagined. It’s one of those Steve Jobs things where it just works the way it is supposed to. I would expect nothing more from Tapbots. Calcbot is a free app in the App Store and is available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and the Mac, with the macOS version currently costing $4.99.
