When unveiling the Apple TV fourth-generation, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “The future of television is apps.” At the time, I thought he was nuts. Now that it is 2017, Cook could have been completely right. The fourth-generation Apple TV could just be exactly where television is heading over the next few years.

Right now, streaming is becoming the cable/satellite TV subscription alternative and for a good reason. According to The Wrap, the average monthly cable bill is expected to hit $200 per month by the year 2020.

That’s expensive for most American consumers and with Netflix only costing $9 a month and the amount of live TV streaming services out there that are cost as low as $20 a month (Sling TV), it’s no wonder why Americans are cutting the cord and switching to live streaming services.

The Apple TV is also a place for gaming. This Apple TV can play games such as Real Racing 3 and Minecraft for Apple TV. It’s great for family nights and for families to spend more time with each other, whether it be playing games or streaming movies and TV shows.

For sports fans, you could not ask for more! With services like Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and the new Hulu with Live TV, sports fans could not ask for more. Most of these live TV streaming services have access to the  FOX Sports GO app and users can watch up to four (FOX Sports related) channels all at once on the same screen!

This means that if you want to watch the NASCAR race on FS1 and also watch the Minnesota Twins game on FOX Sports North (FSN regional coverage), FOX Sports GO will allow you to do just that.

If you’re someone who just wants the basics, the $20 per month Sling TV Orange plan will work perfectly. It is a more a la carte way of watching TV with access to channels like ESPN, TBS, Lifetime, and BBC America.

The newest version of the Apple TV also has been rumored to be getting an Amazon Video app at WWDC 2017. Currently, the app is only available on iOS devices. Content can be streamed directly from Amazon on the Mac, but only through a web browser.

Lastly, with the new TV app having access to Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Now, users can stay up to date on the newest TV shows they are streaming. This makes it so that everything you are streaming can all be found in one app.

Overall, I think the Apple TV really is the future of television. It is one of the few products that has a futuristic attitude and is a product that Apple is trying to push towards the future. And I believe we all can agree on the fact that streaming live TV online is a lot cheaper and simpler than buying a traditional cable and satellite package.
